                           Real Copter 1.1
                          by Nathan Sheldon
=======================================================================
    A patch for the Roland JV-1080, JV-2080, XP-50, XP-60 and XP-80.
=======================================================================

Overview:

I am annoyed at the lack of realism in the "Helicopter" GM Patch in the
JV/XPs and finally decided to make a more realistic sounding Patch. As
far as I'm concerned, the sound designer who designed the GM Patches for
the JV/XP series should have been doing a desk job. They must not have
reaslized that the JV/XPs have basic low frequency waveforms in ROM
which can be used for special effects rather well, because they used a
LFO to badly simulate helicopter blades turning.

Requirements:

None (other than a JV or XP synth). No expansion boards are required.

Control:

Use this: to do this:
----------------------------------------------------------------
Modulation speed up the helicopter engine
Pitch Bend increase/decrease the helicopter's distance from
                       the listener (you)
Aftertouch decreases the volume of the helicopter engine

This Patch has some major differences from the GM "Helicopter" patch.
It still only uses 2 TONEs, but I changed the waveforms used in both of
them and removed the use of LFOs. TONE 1 was using a White Noise
waveform with LFO 1 (set at the saw-toothed waveform) affecting the
level of the sound. This produced a completely fake helicopter sound
and had to go. I replaced the waveform with Low Pulse 1 which sounds
much more like blades chopping through the air (especially with the
low-pass filter). In TONE 2, I replaced the existing organ waveform
with a better-sounding one, added FXM (frequency cross-modulation) for
engine harmonics sounds, and used a low-pass filter to cut out some
unnatural-sounding upper harmonics.

Notes And Commnets:

Please feel free to comment on this patch. You can use it freely
anywhere you wish and re-distribute it (along with this document)
anywhere. It is, howver, Copyright 1998 by Nathan Sheldon. :-) If you
use it in any production that includes credits, please include my name
under synth programming. I can be reached via e-mail at

Version History:

1.0 Initial release.
1.1 Aftertouch now only affects volume of helicopter engine.
Changed engine waveform to a different organ waveform and added
     frequency cross-modulation (FXM).
Added use of Pitch Bend to change the "distance" of the helicopter
     from the listener.
Reduced helicopter "blade speed" (pitch of low waveform) a bit.
